VCU Officially Hires Utah State’s Ryan Odom As New Men’s Basketball Coach

RICHMOND, Va.-Wednesday, Virginia Commonwealth University men’s basketball hired former Utah State men’s basketball head coach Ryan Odom to the same position per numerous reports.

In two seasons at Utah State, Odom led the Aggies to a record of 44-25 (.638).

Prior to his time at Utah State, Odom led the UMBC program for four seasons. Under his watch, the Retrievers became the first No. 16 seed to defeat a No. 1 in NCAA Tournament history when they defeated Virginia in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.

Odom has previous connections to the state of Virginia as he starred as a point guard at NCAA Division III Hampden-Sydney College of Hampden-Sydney, Va. before graduating in 1996.

He began his coaching career at South Florida as an administrative assistant in 1997. Odom has also made coaching stops at Furman, UNC Asheville, American U., Virginia Tech, Charlotte and as the head coach at NCAA Division II Lenoir-Rhyne.

Later Wednesday evening, Utah State confirmed it has begun the process of searching for a new head coach.
