Last week, Elder Ulisses Soares of The Quorum of Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and his wife, Sister Rosana Soares met with the Prime Minister of Tonga Hu’akavemeiliku Soiasi Sovaleni.
Elder Soares presented him with a statuette featuring a family. Elder Soares stated the family is fundamental in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and parents should strengthen their children’s faith in Christ.
Soavleni, in turn, presented Elder Soares with a carved scene depicting the birth of Christ.
Elder Soares was accompanied by Elder Patrick Kearon, the Senior President of the Quorum of the Seventy, Elder K. Brent Nattress, a General Authority and Pacific Area President and Elder Sione Tuione, an Area Seventy.
Later that evening, Elder Soares addressed hundreds of young adult members of the Church.
In other news, the Church’s temple at Richmond, Va. was opened for private tours ahead of its general tour before the dedication.
Virginia Mayor Glenn Youngkin was among the guests to tour the temple. Youngkin said he was humbled by the faith expressed by Latter-day Saints in Virginia.
Youngkin was accompanied on the tour by Elders Jack N. Gerard and Kevin R. Duncan of the Seventy as well as Sister Tracy Y. Browning of the Primary General Presidency.
Also attending was the Reverend Leonard Covington of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church of Roanoke, Va.
In other Church news Monday, The Feather River California Temple will have an open house from August 19-September 9 with the exception of Sundays.
The temple will be dedicated October 8 in two sessions. Elder Soares will perform the dedication.
Before the public tours begin, there will be a media day August 15. Invited guests will tour the temple from August 16-18.
A site for a temple to be built at Huehuetenango, Guatemala has been revealed per Monday reports. Plans are calling for a single-story temple consisting of 10,787 square feet.
Upon completion, this will be the fifth temple of the Salt Lake City-based faith in Guatemala. There are Guatemalan temples in Guatemala City and Quetzaltenango.
Temples at Cobán and Miraflores Guatemala City are currently under construction.
A rendering has been released for the Church’s temple to be constructed at Tampa, Florida.
