PROVO, Utah-Wednesday morning, BYU football head coach Kalani Sitake announced the hiring of former Weber State head coach Jay Hill as the Cougars’ new associate head coach and defensive coordinator.
Hill brings 22 years of coaching experience to the Cougars’ program.
He spent nine years at the helm of the Wildcats’ program, leading them to eight consecutive winning seasons and six straight trips to the FCS playoffs as well as four Big Sky Conference titles.
Hill coached 16 players to 26 different All-American honors while the Wildcats’ head coach.
Prior to his time at Weber State, Hill served as the associate head coach at the University of Utah, working for Ron McBride, Urban Meyer and Kyle Whittingham.
Before becoming a coach, Hill excelled as a junior college All-American at Ricks College (now BYU-Idaho) of Rexburg, Idaho and later played for McBride for two seasons (1998 and 1999) at Utah as a defensive back.
Hill later briefly played in the XFL and signed free agent contracts with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and New York Giants.
Additionally, Sitake announced former BYU linebacker and assistant coach Kelly Poppinga will be the Cougars’ special teams coordinator and defensive assistant coach during Wednesday remarks.
Poppinga comes to BYU from Boise State where he served as the Broncos’ co-special teams coordinator and edge position coach.
