BYU Athletic Department Releases Statement On Volleyball Allegations

PROVO, Utah-Friday morning, BYU athletics released a statement concerning the conclusion of its investigation of allegations of racism August 26 at a volleyball match between the Cougars and Duke at the Smith Fieldhouse.

The athletic department stated all available video and audio recordings, including security footage and raw footage from all camera angles taken by BYUTV of the match, with broadcasting audio removed confirms no racist statements were uttered.

More than 50 individuals who attended the event were reached out to, including Duke athletic department personnel and student-athletes, event security, management and fans in the arena that evening. This included many of the fans in the on-court student section.

As the athletic department extensively reviewed the allegations, they declared “we have not found any evidence to corroborate the allegation that fans engaged in racial heckling or uttered racial slurs at the event.”

Subsequently, the athletic department lifted the ban on the fan who was identified as having shouted the purported racial slur.
