Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office Confirms Death of 7-Year-old Zai Rodriguez Irizarry

HEBER CITY, Utah-The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the death of 7-year-old girl, Zaydanielys “Zai” Rodriguez Irizarry from a gunshot wound Friday evening.

Per a post on the Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, at 10:35 pm Friday night the 911 center obtained a call from a man confirming he was on his way to the Heber Valley Hospital.

About 15 minutes later, the hospital called the 911 center reporting Zai had been admitted after suffering a gunshot wound. She was shot by 34-year-old Christopher Robert O’Connell.

The girl was pronounced dead at 11:30 pm, per officials.

Deputies were subsequently dispatched to the hospital and the girl’s home at the Wasatch Commons Apartments.

Shortly after their arrival, officers reported a gunshot coming from a nearby apartment.

Three intoxicated individuals were subsequently taken into custody.

O’Connell has been charged with manslaughter, possession of a controlled substance, carry of a dangerous weapon under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted individual and intoxication.
