The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Announces Changes To Handbook

SALT LAKE CITY-Wednesday, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints confirmed 75 percent of its General Handbook has been updated.

The latest rounds of updates consist of four rewritten chapters with seven others including added or revised sections.

This text is now available online and in the Gospel Library app. Versions in other languages will come in subsequent months.

Translated portions of previous updates to the handbook were published in October and November 2020 and in January 2021.

The methodology of these changes is to expound upon living the Gospel of Jesus Christ, caring for those in need, inviting all to receive the Gospel and uniting families for eternity.

The significant revisions are as followed:

Chapter 6: The Bishopric. This chapter was previously called “ward leadership.” This entails the bishop’s responsibilities and distinguishes the roles of bishops from branch presidents.

Chapter 23: Sharing the Gospel and Strengthening New and Returning Members.  This chapter focuses on loving others and sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Chapter 24: Missionary Recommendations and Service. This chapter includes updated guidelines on preparing and qualifying for missionary service.

Chapter 29: Meetings in the Church  This chapter entails the various meetings the Church conducts.

There are also sections on vaccinations, affinity fraud, extreme preparation/survivalism, and on local restrictions for sharing the Gospel.

Callings held by members in young single adult and single adult units have been expanded.
