The Church of Jesus Christ Announces Groundbreaking For Temples In South America

SALT LAKE CITY-The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced groundbreaking ceremonies for temples to be built at Antofagasta, Chile and Mendoza, Argentina.

The Antofagasta Chile Temple groundbreaking is slated for November 2020.

Elder Juan Pablo Villar of the South America South Area Presidency will preside over this event.

Plans are calling for a temple consisting of approximately 23,000 square feet to be built on 2.2 acres around Avenida de Las Palmeras 44 in Antofagasta.

This temple will be the third in Chile upon completion. Other Chilean temples are located at Santiago (1983; rededicated, 2006) and Concepcion (2018).

There are 602,373 Latter-day Saints and 74 stakes in Chile. Chilean missions are located in Antofagasta, Concepcion, Osorno, Rancagua, Santiago and Vina del Mar.

The Mendoza Argentina Temple will be the fourth Argentinian temple upon completion. The groundbreaking is slated for November 2020. Elder Allen D. Haynie of the South America South Area Presidency will preside at the ceremony.

The temple will be built along Avenida Champagnat between Calle Dr. Pose and Calle Dr. Coni E.

Plans are calling for a temple consisting of approximately 21,000 square feet.

An adjacent meetinghouse and temple patron housing are also to be built on the site.

The Mendoza Argentina Temple will be the fourth temple in Argentina upon completion.

Other Argentinian temples are located at Buenos Aires (1986; rededicated, 2012) and Cordoba (2015).

Argentina consists of 470,843 Latter-day Saints in 78 stakes. Argentinian missions are located in Bahia Blanca, Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Mendoza, Neuquen, Resistencia, Rosario, Salta and Comodoro Rivadavia.
