SALT LAKE CITY-Sunday morning, the fourth session of the semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, occurred at the Conference Center at Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City.
President Henry B. Eyring, the second counselor in The First Presidency of the Church conducted this session.
The first speaker was Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles. He explained why, unlike other Christian faiths, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not use crosses in its churches.
The reason for this, Elder Holland explained, is because Christ’s Atonement is the central focus of the Church’s methodology.
Additionally, Elder Holland said being a Christian has more to do with the crosses we bear than the crosses we may wear.
The next speaker was Sister J. Anette Dennis, the first counselor in the General Relief Society presidency of the Church.
She spoke of the dangers of making inaccurate judgments as this causes us to erroneously assess situations and not follow in the Savior’s footsteps.
The next speaker was Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles. He spoke of the hypothetical of “Happily Ever After” in the fairytale parlance and said through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, “Happily Ever After” is truly possible.
Elder Gong spoke of the importance of honoring temple covenants during his remarks and how the Saints should be proactive and go to the temple to officiate for our deceased ancestors as swiftly as possible.
The next speaker was Elder Joseph W. Sitate, formerly of the Seventy, who was released during the Saturday afternoon general conference session.
Elder Sitate confirmed “we do not need to be deceived. The miracle of intelligent life constantly plays before us.”
The next speaker was President Steven J. Lund, the general Young Men’s president of the Church. He recounted the experiences of numerous youth in the Church who attended For Strength of Youth (FSY) conferences conducted by the Salt Lake City-based faith throughout the world this past summer.
Pres. Lund said the youth’s testimonies were greatly strengthened because of this process but the true test is now maintaining this as we progress forward.
The next speaker was Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles who spoke of Christ’s parables in New Testament times, particularly the Parable of the Royal Feast.
Elder Bednar cautioned that members of the Church who disregard Father’s counsel are in danger of losing their salvation.
The concluding speaker at this session was President Russell M. Nelson, the president of the Church.
President Nelson portended many wondrous things shall occur among the faithful in coming times. He pointed out the comments of a young boy who toured the Washington DC Temple and saw an altar at the temple and said “this is a nice place for people to rest.”
President Nelson confirmed the profoundness of the boy’s comments saying that Christ provides rest to all those who enter into covenants.
President Nelson continued, encouraging Latter-day Saints to take charge of cultivating their own testimonies. In so doing, he said miracles should be watched for in their respective lives.
