Several Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Historic Sites Have New Names Now

SALT LAKE CITY-The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has recently approved minor adjustments to 17 of the Salt Lake City-based faith’s 26 historical sites.

This is to place a greater emphasis on the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ. This has been a hallmark of present Church president Russell M. Nelson’s tenure, which commenced January 14, 2018.

Jenny Lund, the director of the Church’s historic sites stated these are places where significant events occurred concerning the Restoration and history of the Church.

The following historic sites of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have had their names adjusted:

-Brigham Young Winter Home and Office (St. George, Utah)

-Carthage Jail (Carthage, Ill.)

-Cove Fort (I-15 and I-70 in Central Utah)

-Grandin Building: Book of Mormon Publication Site (Palmyra, N.Y.)

-Hamblin Home (Santa Clara, Utah)

-Hawn’s Mill (Caldwell County, Mo.)

-Johnson Home (Hiram, Ohio)

-Joseph Smith Birthplace (Sharon, Vermont)

-Liberty Jail (Liberty, Mo.)

-Martin’s Cove: Mormon Trail Site (Southwest of Casper, Wyo.)

-Morley Farm (Mentor, Ohio)

-Mormon Battalion Center at San Diego

-Mormon Trail Center at Winter Quarters (Omaha, Neb.)

-Sacred Grove (Palmyra, N.Y.)

-Sixth Crossing: Mormon Trail Site (Lander, Wyo.)

-Rock Creek Hollow: Mormon Trail Site (Lander, Wyo.)

-Whitmer Farm: Church Organization Site (Waterloo, N.Y.)

The following sites did not have their names changed:

-Beehive House (Salt Lake City)

-Far West Temple Site (Near Kingston, Mo.)

-Hill Cumorah (Palmyra, N.Y.)

-Historic Kirtland (Kirtland, Ohio)

-Historic Nauvoo (Nauvoo, Ill.)

-Independence Visitors Center (Independence, Mo.)

-Kanesville Tabernacle (Council Bluffs, Iowa)

-Priesthood Restoration Site (Susquehanna, Pa.)

-St. George Tabernacle (St. George, Utah)
