Open House For Rio de Janeiro Brazil Temple Postponed

RIO DE JANEIRO-Wednesday, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints confirmed the open house for their recently completed temple at Rio De Janeir, Brazil will be postponed.

Ground was broken on this temple March 4, 2017 by General Authority Seventy, Elder Claudio R.M. Costa following an announcement April 6, 2013 by then-Church president Thomas S. Monson.

Ground was also broken on the Belem, Brazil Temple in August 2019.

There are presently seven operative temples in Brazil: Campinas, Curtiba, Fortaleza, Manaus, Porto Alegre, Recife and Sao Paulo.

Temples have also been announced for Salvador and Brasilia, the Brazilian capital city.

The Church’s history in Brazil dates back to 1913 when native German Church member Max Richard Zapf immigrated to Brazil.

The first branch in Brazil was created July 6, 1930.

The first Brazilian stake was created in Sao Paulo in 1966.

Presently, Brazil consists of 1,394,616 Latter-Day Saints in 273 stakes, 2,111 congregations (1,692 wards, 419 branches) and 355 family history centers.
