Man killed after pointing gun at police in Utah identified

PRICE, Utah (AP)-Authorities have identified a man who was fatally shot after they say he pointed a gun at police in east-central Utah. The Carbon County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the Dec. 21 shooting of 40-year-old Mark Stoddard of Huntington in neighboring Emery County.

Authorities say Stoddard had been pulled over on suspicion of drunken driving and pointed a gun at a sheriff’s deputy before driving off.

A state trooper later stopped Stoddard’s vehicle by placing spike strips on the road. Authorities say Stoddard again pointed a gun at police, who then fired at Stoddard, killing him.
