SALT LAKE CITY-Per an updated Wednesday morning, a man has been charged with killing his father in Sanpete County.
The incident occurred Monday as 32-year-old Michael Hartnell killed 73-year-old Joseph Vallejo at Vallejo’s home in Hideaway Valley (Fairview).
Hartnell took Vallejo’s cellphone and car, drove to the Indianaola fire station, called 911 and then returned to Vallejo’s home to await the arrival of police.
This is per a police affidavit filed in court.
Tuesday, Hartnell was charged in 6th District Court with murder, a first-degree felony, and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, a third-degree felony.
Additional details concerning the shooting were released Wednesday.
Monday, Sanpete County dispatchers received the 911 calls at 5:20 pm.
The affidavit attests Hartnell stated he shot someone and called to give himself up. At this time, no information was obtained from Hartnell at the time of where this alleged incident occurred, per the affidavit.
Deputies discovered that the phone used to call 911 was registered to Vallejo and went to his address.
They found Hartnell there and took him into custody after discovering Vallejo had died from a gunshot wound in the living room, per court documents.
Hartnell was interviewed by sheriff’s detectives after being taken into custody.
Hartnell reported he had stolen a gun out of Vallejo’s vehicle a couple of weeks ago. On Monday, he left Vallejo’s residence to fill up some jugs with water, per the affidavit.
The affidavit confirmed Vallejo then returned to the home and grabbed the pistol out of the center console of the truck, cocking it.
Hartnell then walked into the house and discovered Vallejo there. Hartnell testified he then shot Vallejo in the head, causing Vallejo to fall on the ground, per the affidavit.
Hartnell told investigators he is mentally ill and suffers from “schizophrenic episodes” per the affidavit.
