Layton Man Charged With Killing Woman He Met On Tinder To Remain In Jail Without Bail

FARMINGTON, Utah-A Layton man charged with killing a woman he met on Tinder will remain in jail without bail, per a ruling from Judge John Morris Friday morning.

24-year-old Ethan Robert Hunsaker was charged with first-degree murder Wednesday in relation to the killing of 25-year-old Ashlyn Black.

During the four-minute video hearing, Hunsaker waived a preliminary hearing concerning charges filed against him.

He informed Morris that he was aware of the charges against him.

Morris declined to provide bail for Hunsaker, scheduling his next court appearance for June 16.

Hunsaker’s appointed representative for the Friday hearing was attorney Mark Arrington.

Hunsaker has been charged with murdering Black Sunday morning after the two met for the first time Saturday night.

He informed authorities that he began communicating with Black through Tinder that evening and they went to a bar together before going to his home, per an affidavit filed in 2nd District Court.

Hunsaker told police he began choking Black after waking up next to her. He then stabbed her with a knife he had grabbed from his kitchen before calling emergency dispatch, per the affidavit.

Emergency crews pronounced Black dead at the scene.

The affidavit attests Hunsaker has a history of mental health problems. He told police that he had “daily thoughts” concerning suicide and homicidal ideas.

Monday, Black’s family issued a statement, dubbing Hunsaker “a monster” while calling the alleged crime both “senseless and evil.”
