January 2023 Report: Temple Square Renovation

SALT LAKE CITY-Wednesday, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gave a renovation update for Temple Square for January 2023. This is the first renovation update the Salt Lake City-based faith has given concerning its headquarters for the calendar year.

During 2022, Main Street Plaza in downtown Salt Lake City received waterproofing and landscaping updates. This plaza is owned by the Church.

Continual work occurred on the “jack and bore” process of installing reinforced concrete beams under the temple’s existing foundation.

The Church Office Building received installed waterproofing and a snow-melting heating conduit as well.

Excavation was also completed on the north side of the Salt Lake Temple and construction commenced on the guest experience pavilions south of the temple.

Construction also started on the three additional lower floors of the temple addition. These are located just north of the temple. They consist of two baptistries, sealing (marriage ceremony) rooms, dressing rooms and administrative offices.

Completed excavation of the northwest corner of Temple Square has also occurred. These entail gardens for peaceful contemplation. Other temples recently dedicated throughout the Church also feature such things.

In 2023, the following things are expected to occur:

Renovations on the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, Beehive House and Lion House.

Continual construction on the guest experience pavilions south of the temple

Completion of the Church Office Building plaza (expected in late autumn 2023)

Completion of the Main Street Plaza (expected in late autumn 2023)

Completion of the gardens and additional facilities in the northwest corner of Temple Square (expected in early autumn 2023)

the installation of structural steel frames inside the tower spires

the beginning of the installation of the base isolator system

the completion of the structural work of the three new floors on the north side of the historic temple

the reinforcement of the stone walls and towers. This includes vertical drilling from the wall and tower columns to accommodate and connect post-tensioned cables to the new foundation
