PROVO, Utah-Tuesday, President Dallin H. Oaks of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Quorum of Twelve Apostles spoke at the BYU Devotional at the Marriott Center.
Pres. Oaks encouraged his audience to “courageously carry out their unique mission to pursue spiritual and secular education.”
Pres. Oaks stated BYU should be “different from the world’s way” when worldly tendencies do not follow the Lord’s way.
He told his listeners to love the Lord and then love they neighbor as thyself as recorded in the Scriptures.
Pres. Oaks titled his talk “Going Forward In The Second Century,” a variation of a 1975 address given by then-Church president Spencer W. Kimball at BYU when Pres. Oaks was the president of BYU.
The expectation, Pres. Oaks said, is for BYU to become a unique university in all the world, for the “natural unfolding” of knowledge to occur as pertaining to revelation from the Lord and that the institution be willing to “break with the educational establishment” if necessary.
Pres. Oaks also shared a clip from Candid Camera wherein the four actors entered an elevator facing the wrong way. He then asked the students if they were willing to face the opposite direction in the world’s elevators.
Pres. Oaks also asked his audience to remember their covenants, play an active role in church life, keep Christ’s commandments and “stand up for the marginalized.”
