BYU Announces The Formation of a New Office of Belonging

PROVO, Utah-Monday, ahead of the advent of the fall semester at Brigham Young University’s Provo campus, university president Kevin J. Worthen announced the formation of a new Office of Belonging.

A press release confirms it is to be led by a vice president-level official who will be a member of the President’s Council.

This new office will focus on assisting campus members to achieve the community of belonging as outlined in a newly-crafted statement concerning the idea of “belonging” on campus.

This office will primarily focus on coordinating and enhancing belonging services and efforts on campus.

This announcement comes on the heels of an in-depth report from BYU’s Committee on Race, Equity and Belonging as completed in February.

Worthen expressed appreciation to the members of CoREB who gave so much “of their time, their talents and their hearts” in adhering to the counsel of President Russell M. Nelson (of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) and leaders of the NAACP for “educational leaders to review processes, laws and organizational attitudes regarding racism and root them out once and for all.”

Worthen confirmed the President’s Council has “carefully and thoroughly” considered all information.

Worthen concluded, saying this office will serve as the guide for addressing “the needs of all marginalized individuals on campus.”
