LOGAN, Utah-Wednesday evening, former Utah State men’s basketball standout Sam Merrill was drafted No. 60 by the New Orleans Pelicans. A trade has been proposed by the Pelicans to send the former Bountiful High School star to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Merrill, who averaged 19.7 points and 4.1 rebounds last season for the Aggies, posted 2,197 points and 477 career assists at Utah State, each of which rank him second all-time in school annals.
Merrill is the first Aggie to be drafted since Greg Grant who was drafted No. 132 overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 6th Round of the 1986 NBA Draft.
With former Utah State quarterback Jordan Love drafted No. 26 overall by the Green Bay Packers in this past April’s 2020 NFL Draft, this commemorates the first time since 1968 that the Aggies have had draft picks in both the NFL and NBA drafts in the same year.
Merrill has previously been named as the Mountain West Conference Player of the year and a 2-time All-Mountain West Conference team selection.
