BYU Basketball Adds Lee Cummard As New Assistant Coach

PROVO, Utah (Byucougars.com)-Wednesday afternoon, BYU men’s basketball head coach Dave Rose announced an adjustment to his staff.

Rose confirmed that he has promoted Lee Cummard to fill the void left by Heath Schroyer when he was hired as head coach of the McNeese State Cowboys of the Southland Conference in March.

Rose lauded Cummard’s abilities, saying “Lee is a winner. He’s been a winner everywhere he’s been.”

Rose also cited Cummard’s “leadership and drive” as valuable traits which will help him excel on the staff.

Cummard has been a part of Rose’s staff the past two seasons as a graduate assistant while in this role, he has helped the Cougars to consecutive 20-win seasons and NIT appearances.

In his remarks Wednesday, Cummard expressed his love for BYU basketball as well as the university and is anticipating getting into the gym and preparing for the upcoming season.

Prior to joining Rose’s staff in 2016, Cummard played professionally overseas from 2009-2016, making stops in France, Japan and Belgium.

Cummard was also a standout guard at BYU from 2005-2009, helping the Cougars win three Mountain West Conference regular season titles, as well as three bids to the NCAA Tournament.

Cummard proved himself a winner for the Cougars, playing for Rose during 97 wins. This statistic makes him the winningest BYU men’s basketball player in history.

Cummard also showed impressive durability during his playing days, as he appeared in all 131 games the Cougars played as a collegian.
