SAN FRANCISCO-Monday, University of Utah junior receiver/return man Britain Covey and freshman defensive tackle Junior Tafuna landed Pac-12 special teams and defensive line player of the week awards respectively.
Covey returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown and Tafua posted 1.5 sacks in the Utes’ 38-7 rout of then No. 3 Oregon Saturday at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
This win secured a Pac-12 South title for the Utes.
Because of the Utes’ dynamic victory, they were named as the Cheez-It Bowl National Team of the Week as selected by the Football Writers Association of America.
This commemorates the third time in program history the Utes have received an FWAA honor.
The last time the Utes were so honored occurred in 2015 which followed another victory over Oregon, a 62-20 decision over the then-No. 13 Ducks.
Utah returns to action Friday afternoon by hosting Colorado to conclude the regular season.
