COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-Tuesday, the Mountain West Conference announced its all-conference football team with Utah State posting nine representatives on the respective teams.
The 9-3 (6-2 in MWC play) Aggies are the Mountain Division champions and will face West Division champion San Diego State Saturday in the Mountain West Conference championship game at Carson, Calif.
The Mountain West offensive MVP is Nevada junior quarterback Carson Strong.
Strong, who is considered among the best signal-callers in this upcoming NFL draft class, threw for 4,186 yards, 36 touchdowns and 8 interceptions for the Wolf Pack this season.
San Diego State junior defensive lineman Cameron Thomas is the conference defensive player of the year. This season, Thomas has 10.5 sacks, 20.5 tackles for a loss and a forced fumble for the Aztecs.
Thomas’ teammate, junior kicker Matt Araiza is the conference special teams player of the year. Araiza connected on 62.5 percent (15-24) of his kicks on the season and made all 39 of his PAT attempts for San Diego State.
The conference’s freshman of the year is UNLV signal-caller Cameron Friel. Friel completed 62.4 percent of his passes this season for 1,608 yards, 6 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for the Rebels.
The conference’s coach of the year is San Diego State head coach Brady Hoke. Hoke led the Aztecs to an 11-1 (.917) record during the regular season.
This is Hoke’s second stint with the Aztecs. He is 28-17 (.622) all-time as San Diego State’s head coach, having coached there in 2009 and 2010 as well.
The Aggies’ representation on the various Mountain West Conference teams is as follows:
1st Team
senior receiver Devin Thompkins (87 rec, 1,543 yards, 9 TD’s). His 1,543 receiving yards lead the nation.
2nd Team
graduate senior linebacker Justin Rice (3 interceptions, 12 tackles for a loss, forced fumble)
senior kickoff returner Savon Scarver (24.3 yards per kickoff return, TD return)
Honorable Mention
graduate senior safety Shaq Bond (3 interceptions, sack, 2 forced fumbles)
graduate senior defensive end Nick Heninger (5 sacks, 5 forced fumbles, 3 passes defensed, 15.5 tackles for a loss)
senior punt returner Jordan Nathan (8.8 yards per punt return)
senior offensive lineman Alfred Edwards
senior wide receiver Derek Wright (39 rec, 699 yards, 10 TD’s)
