SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson says Utah residents are at risk of being undercounted in the census next year unless efforts are made to reach out to groups that could be hard to count.
The Salt Lake Tribune reported Friday that an inaccurate population count could cost the state millions of dollars in federal funding.
Wilson is urging local governments, philanthropists and businesses to fund efforts showing residents the importance of census participation.
Wilson says the state has growing numbers of groups considered hard to count, including minorities, people who speak little English and people moving into newly constructed areas.
Salt Lake County is spending $240,000 to reach these groups. The state has appropriated no funding for the effort.
