(La Sal, UT) — A uranium mine in southeastern Utah is ready to reopen. The Trump administration approved reopening the Velvet-Wood Mine near Lisbon Valley on Friday, the first to receive the green light under a new 14-day environmental review process. Officials noted the mine will produce both uranium and vanadium. It was in production for five years before shutting down in 1984, and is still owned by Canadian company Anfield Energy.
