St. George Residents Protest Governor Herbert’s Stay At Home Order

ST. GEORGE, Utah-Wednesday evening, 100 St. George residents gathered at the Washington County offices in downtown St. George to protest Utah Governor Gary Herbert’s COVID-19 directive.

A video posted to the Facebook account of Mary Burkett, a candidate to represent Utah’s 2nd Congressional District (which includes Washington County) depicts numerous protesters clamoring for the right to return to their normal lives.

James Wilkins, a reporter for The Spectrum, confirms “hundreds of people” attended this event.

Attendees were asked to follow social distancing regulations and avoid gathering in large groups.

Burkett expressed her hopes that “the mayor [Jon Pike] and the governor” are listening, Burkett revealed in her Facebook video.

The event was organized by St. George-based attorney Larry Meyers and its intent was to “demand that Utah’s state and local legal restrictions on these rights be lifted.” This is so Utahns can return to work with “appropriate precautions” per a news release.

Presently, 39 of Utah’s 2,542 positive cases for COVID-19 (0.0153 percent) have emanated from Washington County as of Wednesday’s totals. Thursday’s will not be released until this afternoon.

The governor’s office and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office at Hurricane did not immediately return a request for comment.
