SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson is headed to the U.S.-Mexico border, saying she wants to get a first-hand look at the humanitarian crisis there.

Her office said in a statement Monday that she is one of 18 county leaders from across the country traveling to El Paso, Texas, with the National Association of Counties.

She says Salt Lake County welcomes immigrants and is “closely tied” to the complex issues at the border.

Wilson expects that seeing Border Patrol facilities, impoverished neighborhoods and the Port of Entry will help inform the local response.

She departs Tuesday and will return Thursday.
