Man Arrested After Attempting To Carjack Vehicles

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah-Saturday, 47-year-old Herbert Whitby Smith was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on investigation of two counts of aggravated robbery and two more of kidnapping.

The incident started at 7:40 pm Friday in the parking lot of a Little Caesar’s located at 4124 S. Redwood Road in Taylorsville.

Smith got into a vehicle with a woman and her infant child and attempted to drive away, per a police affidavit.

The affidavit says the victim was sitting in the passenger rear seat with her infant child when her husband went to get dinner inside the restaurant.

Smith then walked up to her vehicle, got into the driver’s seat and attempted to shift the vehicle into drive.

The victim yelled at the suspect several times but he did not respond.

The victim was unable to get her infant child out of the vehicle as her attention was fixed on the suspect’s attempts to drive away with her and the child in the vehicle, per the affidavit.

Smith got out of her car and then attempted to get into five other vehicles in this parking lot, police wrote.

He then went into the Little Caesar’s and attempted to place an order before departing from the restaurant and entered another vehicle in front of the restaurant.

The car’s owner found Smith in the drivers’ seat and forcibly pulled him out, per the affidavit.

Police spotted Smith a few feet away and arrested him.

Smith was then transported to jail but was refused because he swallowed several bags of heroin, the affidavit confirmed.

Smith was then taken to a hospital where he was later cleared and then taken to jail.

In 2000, Smith was convicted of automobile homicide and sentenced from one-15 years at the Utah State Prison, per court records. This past October, he was convicted of assault.
