High School Seniors Petition For Graduation To Be Postponed

SALT LAKE CITY-With news that school courses will be canceled throughout the rest of this school year, a group of high school seniors from Salt Lake City area schools are calling for their graduations to be postponed to late summer so they can possibly have these ceremonies in their honor in person.

It is important that graduations throughout the Beehive State for high school seniors have not yet been canceled.

Furthermore, Dixie State University and the University of Utah have each set tentative December 2020 dates for these ceremonies to occur to honor the Class of 2020.

Virtual graduations are on the table, but certain seniors, such as Cyprus High School senior Noah Burbidge, believe such things would not be special to him and his friends.

Granite School District spokesperson Ben Horsley has said that school district wants to make the ceremony special for all graduates.

This is why Horsley is adamant about postponement, especially if circumstances become propitious enough for graduations to occur for schools in his district in July or August.

Granite District high schools include Cottonwood, Cyprus, Granger, Hunter, Kearns, Olympus, Skyline and Taylorsville.

Jeff Haney, the spokesperson for the Canyons School District has said “all things are on the table” concerning how graduations will or may occur.

Canyons District high schools include Alta, Brighton, Corner Canyon, Hillcrest and Jordan.

Dr. Anthony Godfrey, the superintendent of Jordan School District, reciprocated the same feelings as Haney on this matter.

Jordan District high schools include Bingham, Copper Hills, Herriman, Mountain Ridge, Riverton and West Jordan.

If and when the Wasatch School District considers such things, we will have a report on this as swiftly as possible. Our colleague, Rachel Kahler, who always does excellent work on her comprehensive reports, will likely substantiate that with her own report.

Stay tuned for all the latest.
