OREM, Utah-Wednesday, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced a groundbreaking date for its temple at Orem, Utah.
This ceremony will be Saturday September 5, Labor Day weekend, with Utah Area president Craig C. Christensen, presiding at the event.
Attendance at the site is by invitation only.
This new temple will be located on a 16-acre site located approximately at 1471 S. Geneva Road.
This site is west of Interstate 15 and south of University Parkway.
Plans call for a three-story temple consisting of about 70,000 square feet with a center spire.
A 20,000-square foot meetinghouse is to be constructed on the temple site as well.
The Orem Utah Temple is one of two Utah temples announced in October 2019 by Church president Russell M. Nelson.
Presently, Utah has 17 temples currently in operation.
In addition to the announcement of the Orem Utah Temple, other Utah temples to be announced include Syracuse, Taylorsville, Tooele Valley (Erda) and Washington County (the eastern side of St. George).
Temples at Layton and Saratoga Springs are currently under construction.
This brings the total to 24 temples either in operation or announced for the Beehive State for the Salt Lake City-based faith.
Members of the faith in Utah number 2,126,216, or 68.5 percent of Utahns. 1 in 2 Utahns is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
There are presently 604 stakes and 170 family history centers in Utah.
Present temples in Utah include St. George (1877), Logan (1884), Manti (1888), Salt Lake (1893), Ogden (1972), Provo (1972), Jordan River (1981), Bountiful (1995), Mount Timpanogos (1996), Vernal (1997), Monticello (1998), Draper (2009), Oquirrh Mountain (2009), Brigham City (2012), Payson (2015), Provo City Center (2016) and Cedar City (2017).
