PROVO, Utah-This week, the Brigham Young statue on the Brigham Young University campus was vandalized.
This prominent statue on campus, located in front of the Abraham Smoot Administration Building, was vandalized sometime between June 14 and June 15.
The word “racist” was brazenly painted on the statue with red paint, some of which splattered on to the building sign.
BYU Police Lt. Rich Christianson confirmed this on Friday. Also painted was the sign to the administration building, featuring the letter “X,” per a police report and photos of the incident obtained by KSL via a government records request.
The suspects appeared to cover the statue in red latex paint, Christianson stated, adding that it looked to have been done hastily.
A bucket of red latex paint had been left near the base of the statue, per photos taken by university police.
Representatives of BYU’s grounds crew and paint shop quickly removed paint from the statue Monday morning.
The red “X” on the granite sign to the Smoot Building required abrasive blasting to remove, police documents attested.
BYU’s student newspaper, the Daily Universe, was the first to report on the vandalism.
The Daily Universe also reported that two individuals had been found attempting to hang a sign reading “Black Lives Matter” around the neck of the Karl G. Maeser statue June 16.
Furthermore, university police records indicate an active investigation into “criminal mischief” emanating from a June 16 incident at the Maeser Building.
BYU police logs confirm an act of “criminal mischief” occurred between June 14 and 6:37 am on June 15 when it was reported.
At this time, it is unknown if these two incidents are related. Both of these investigations remain active, per campus police logs.
Part of this investigation consists of checking cameras to see if a suspect could be identified, per the police report.
Anyone with information on the vandalism can call BYU police at 1-801-422-2222.
