Authorities Identify Wrong-Way Driver Who Died In Crash In Parleys Canyon

PARLEYS SUMMIT, Utah-Saturday night, one person died as a sedan and pickup collided on Interstate 80 in Parleys Canyon.

Per statements from the Utah Highway Patrol, authorities received calls about a wrong-way drive on I-80 around 11:41 pm.

Troopers representing both Salt Lake and Summit counties responded as the canyon straddles their respective borders, while reports of a serious crash surfaced later.

Troopers discovered a silver 2001 Toyota Corolla and a white 2015 Ford F-250 pulling an enclosed trailer had collided, causing the fatality.

The Corolla caused the accident, driving westward in the eastbound lanes of the interstate.

The driver of the Corolla died in the incident and he was later identified as 50-year-old Arturo Hernandez of Park City, per UHP.

The UHP also said the Ford’s male driver and female passenger successfully escaped the vehicle before flames consumed the passenger side.

They were transported to area hospitals with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

At this time, troopers do not know why Hernandez was traveling in the wrong direction.
