KAYSVILLE, Utah-Monday, Kaysville Mayor Katarina Witt was called to resign by Alliance For a Better Utah because of her decision to invite country music star Collin Raye to the city for a concert May 30.
Witt expressed her support for this concert in a press release issued last week by Utah Business Revival.
Witt was also called out by Woods Cross Republican Sen. Todd Weiler, calling this act a “publicity stunt,” claiming she is using it to “generate free media” amid her aspirations to run for Congress.
Witt defended her decision, saying she approves of where Davis County’s numbers are in regard to COVID-19.
Witt cemented her stance, saying “If the government always gets to decide when it’s safe enough for you to have constitutional freedoms, then you don’t have constitutional freedoms.”
Kaysville City Councilwoman Michelle Barber confirmed the Kaysville City Council is not endorsing this event and is considering all options to prevent it from occurring within the city’s jurisdiction.
Barber said Witt surprised the council as she told them about the concert less than 24 hours before publicly announcing it.
Witt acknowledged a concern for public safety exists but cited Utah Gov. Gary Herbert’s decision to move Utah to “yellow” or “low risk.”
Amid the disdain of public health officials for considering such an event, Witt advises people to exercise good judgment and “make the best call for their families and themselves.”
