WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) — Wednesday night, a man wanted by police was fatally shot and two officers were wounded in a shooting in West Valley City, per authorities.
Officers found Anei Joker, 20, who was wanted in robbery and rape investigation, in a vehicle with a baby in the parking lot of a convenience store in West Valley City, police said. Joker refused to come out but, after some negotiations, released the baby, police said. According to police, at some point Joker got out and fired at authorities.
A West Valley City detective was wounded and hospitalized in critical condition, police said. A Unified Police Department officer was also wounded and hospitalized in serious condition, police said.
According to court documents, Joker was convicted of aggravated robbery and pleaded guilty to attempted discharge of a firearm and aggravated assault in June and sentenced to three years of probation and a suspended prison sentence, per reports.
In a letter to the judge, Joker, who said he had two children, apologized and asked for probation, saying he had learned his lesson. He wrote that he had a difficult life and had to live in a homeless shelter when he was young after his brother was sent to prison.
