Heavy rains bring flash flooding, damage across Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) —Monday, several parts of Utah are cleaning up after heavy rains brought flooding, mudslides and hail on Sunday.

Streets turned into torrents of rainwater and flooded parts of Salt Lake City and Tooele, surrounding cars and sparking warnings for people to get inside for their own safety. In the town of Stockton, many homes were damaged and a woman in her 80s was briefly trapped before being rescued by the Stockton Fire Department, Fox13 reported.

Big Cottonwood Canyon was closed for several hours after a mudslide blocked the road.

In southern Utah, Cedar City suffered from flash floods for the second time in a week, temporarily closing Interstate 15. Many homes in the nearby community of Enoch were damaged. Thousands of residents lost power for a time in the evening. Outages were also reported in the areas in and around Salt Lake City and Ogden, where many homes also sustained damage.

— A miner died in central Utah after a flash flood swept him away, authorities said Monday.

A wall of water and debris came barreling into a canyon near the Gentry Mountain Mine and swept away several crews including the man who died, according to the Emery County Sheriff’s Office.

Another miner swept away survived after he was able to grab a tree as he was carried downstream. The water caused a car carrying a group of men to rollover, but they kicked out the windows and escaped, authorities said.
