SALT LAKE CITY-Monday, the former Peruvian president Francisco Sagasti and interfaith leaders in Peru, including The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, celebrated 200 years of independence.
As of July 28, 2021, 200 years have passed since Peruvian national hero Jose de San Martin declared independence at the Plaza de Armas of Lima.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has had a presence in Peru since July 1956.
This interreligious meeting, “We Pray For Peru,” was broadcast live on Peruvian television.
Sagasti was joined by Peruvian state ministers, ambassadors and prominent religious leaders from across the country.
Prominent Catholic leaders in attendance included Lima Archbishop Carlos Castillo (January 25, 2019-present) and Huancayo Archbishop Cardinal Pedro Baretto.
Offering a prayer was The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ South America Northwest Area Director of Communication Guillermo Estrugo.
Also representing the Church at the event was Elder Jorge Zeballos, the president of the South America Northwest Area.
He thanked Pres. Sagasti, government officials and those in attendance for participation in this historic event.
