SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A group accused of beating a man to death behind a Utah grocery store may have done so because they believed he gave his pregnant girlfriend a black eye, according to arrest records.
Fred Valdamar Ortiz, 41, was chased down and beaten by a group of at least six people, including a 13 year old, behind a grocery store in Magna, Utah on Monday, according to police.
One member of the group told police that when they reached Ortiz, another member hit him with a car. He continued to run away until the group eventually caught up with him and beat him with a pole, arrest reports say.
Ortiz was found unconscious and not breathing when police arrived. He was taken to the hospital but died from his injuries, KUTV reported.
Two of the at least five suspects have been arrested.
