SOUTH JORDAN, Utah-Thursday, South Jordan police continued putting the clues together concerning a timeline of events leading up to the murders of 8-year-old Seth Osborn and his 10-year-old brother Ezra Osborn.
They were shot by their father, 41-year-old Brian Thomas Osborn, who then took his own life.
Detectives hope they can narrow down when these tragic events occurred before being discovered, per South Jordan Police Lt. Matt Pennington.
Just after 4:00 pm Tuesday, the boys’ mother, Sandra Ang, arrived home, discovering Seth Osborn in the living room leading to the garage.
Ang rushed him to the hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said.
As officers went to the house, they discovered the bodies of Seth and Brian Osborn in the basement, Pennington said.
Osborn and Ang were divorced in October, per court records. Police said he has not lived in the Daybreak house with her or the two boys for several months.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic in Utah, this reportedly changed the situation.
Ang, who works at Primary Children’s Hospital and is therefore an essential worker, needed someone to watch the kids, Pennington said.
Osborn, who had rented a nearby basement apartment was not working because of his business being closed and was asked to babysit Seth and Ezra, Pennington said.
Pennington said detectives believed there was little interaction between Osborn and Ang each time he watched the children.
After the shootings, police served search warrants on Osborn’s apartment. Pennington said investigators found several journals which Osborn seemed to frequently write in.
Pennington said these writings point to possible mental illness because the journals’ contents are odd and “all over the place.”
Police last had contact with Osborn in November when his divorce from Ang was finalized.
In 2018, Ang and Osborn had an argument, prompting Ang to leave the house and call police from a nearby convenience store, Pennington confirmed. No one was arrested in that case.
Authorities believe that Osborn’s erratic behavior was the cause for the divorce.
A GoFundMe campaign has been started to help raise money for funeral costs.
