Structure Fires in Salt Lake Valley Wednesday

MILLCREEK, Utah-Wednesday, Salt Lake Valley firefighters have been busy doing their best to extinguish fires.

Two large blazes occurred Wednesday morning within hours of each other, leaving a net 45 residents displaced.

However, firefighters confirm no residents or first responders were injured.

The first blaze was reported at 2:00 am at the Driftwood Park Apartments, located at 3945 S. 700 West in Murray.

Smoke and flames were visible from the third floor of the building as firefighters arrived, per Unified Fire Authority spokesman Matthew McFarland.

Each of these 12 units suffered either fire, water or smoke damage, leaving all 43 tenants displaced, per McFarland.

The Red Cross was on the scene to assist displaced residents.

A possible cause for the fire was still being investigated Wednesday.

About 50 firefighters from the Murray, Salt Lake City and South Salt Lake Fire departments assisted Unified Fire.

They used three aerial streams to knock down the flames and it took crews roughly 90 minutes to bring the flames under control.

Twelve other units at Driftwood Park were currently under construction at this time because of another fire that displaced 100 tenants last August, McFarland said.

Wednesday, there was no evidence suggesting that the two fires were connected.

At 4:00 am, a large commercial fire was reported at 3975 S. Highland Drive at A New Day Spa of Millcreek.

This also affected an Allstate Insurance office on the property and two apartments housing the business owners.

All of the tenants were able to get out safely because of smoke alarms alerting them to the fire.

Smoke and flames shot through the structure by the time crews arrived.

The cause of the fire was still being investigated Wednesday morning and a damage estimate was also not immediately available.
