DRAPER, Utah-The No. 13 Juan Diego Soaring Eagle edged No. 20 Bountiful 50-49 Wednesday in the first round of the 5A boys basketball state tournament. The Soaring Eagle next visits No. 4 Alta Friday at 7:00 pm in the 2nd round.
SPRINGVILLE, Utah-Nate Visentin stepped up with 27 points and the No. 12 Springville Red Devils surged past No. 2 Uintah 69-60 Wednesday in the first round of the 5A boys state tournament. The Red Devils next face No. 5 Cedar Valley in the 2nd round Friday at 7:00 pm.
SALT LAKE CITY-Matthew Fredrick’s 28 points led the way and the No. 16 East Leopards overpowered No. 17 Hillcrest 65-40 in the first round of the 5A boys state tournament Wednesday. Maddux Albers had 16 points in the loss for the Huskies. East next visits No. 1 Olympus Friday at 7:00 pm in the 2nd round.
PAYSON, Utah-Isaac Wolfe led the way with 22 points and the No. 15 Payson Lions waxed No. 18 Murray 72-58 Wednesday in the first round of the 5A boys state tournament. Chudi Anosike’s 20 points led the Spartans in the loss. Payson next faces No. 2 Cottonwood in the 2nd round Friday at 7:00 pm.
OREM, Utah-Lance Reynolds posted 14 points and the No. 14 Orem Tigers edged No. 19 Highland 50-48 in the first round of the 5A boys state tournament Wednesday. Nathan Johnsen had 18 points in defeat for the Rams. Orem next faces No. 3 Woods Cross in the 2nd round Friday at 7:00 pm.
BRIGHAM CITY, Utah-Elijah Kersey netted 16 points and the No. 11 Box Elder Bees edged No. 22 Viewmont 59-56 Wednesday in the first round of the 5A boys state tournament. Scott Noel’s 18 points and 11 rebounds led the Vikings in defeat. The Bees next face No. 6 Lehi Friday at 7:00 pm in the 2nd round.
SALEM, Utah-Chase DeGraffenried had 27 points and the No. 10 Salem Hills Skyhawks outlasted No. 23 Provo 69-65 in the first round of the 5A boys state tournament Wednesday. Aaron Castagnetto’s 18 points led the Bulldogs in the loss. Salem Hills next faces No. 7 Timpview in the 2nd round Friday at 7:00 pm.
SALT LAKE CITY-Yorgio Golesis posted 24 points and the No. 9 Skyline Eagles got past No. 24 Northridge 63-57 in the first round of the 5A boys state tournament Wednesday. De’Quone Kennedy’s 19 points led the Knights in defeat. The Eagles next visit No. 8 Brighton Friday at 7:00 pm in the 2nd round.
