Cleanup Efforts Begin After Cyclone Gabrielle Strikes New Zealand

SALT LAKE CITY-Per a Thursday report, members and missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New Zealand are searching for those who have lost their homes after Gabrielle Cyclone struck the Pacific Island country February 6.

The Church’s Pacific Area president, President Elder K. Brett Nattress, confirmed the Church is praying for those who have suffered loss of family members and property.

President David Thomson of the Church’s New Zealand Wellington Mission confirmed all missionaries are safe and accounted for under his care.

Four missionaries were evacuated from the Napier (Hawke’s Bay) area as part of a wider community evacuation led by New Zealand civil defense workers as the floodwaters rose.

President Garrick Parr of the the New Zealand Auckland Mission of the Church also confirmed all of the missionaries in the Auckland Mission are safe and accounted for.

President Jeffrey Nikoaia of the New Zealand Hamilton Mission reported efforts are being made to contact the two remaining missionaries who are in an area where communication has not yet been restored.

Subsequent reports confirm these missionaries were located late Thursday afternoon in the Northern Hemisphere.

Reports indicate several of the Salt Lake City-based faith’s meetinghouses in northern New Zealand and Hawke’s Bay have suffered flooding and other damages.

As incoming reports are gathered, Church leadership in New Zealand will determine the best way to support recovery efforts in subsequent days and weeks.
