Utah State Athletic Director John Hartwell Steps Down

LOGAN, Utah-Tuesday morning, Utah State athletic director John Hartwell has stepped down from his position per numerous sources.

Hartwell has been with the Aggies since 2015 after which he had been the athletic director at Troy.

Hartwell had previous stints at Mississippi and Georgia State in his sports administration career.

During his tenure, the Aggies’ men’s basketball team has made the NCAA Tournament on two occasions and the football program won its first Mountain West Conference championship in program history in 2022.

There has also been turmoil as former USU football player Patrick Maddox accused the university and head coach Blake Anderson of blackmail and retaliation for trying to assist his friend in a lawsuit against the school for mishandling a previous sexual assault allegation.

Anderson said he will “vigorously defend himself” and the university against the “false allegations.”

This news emerged October 28.

Hartwell cited the cause of stepping down as needing to spend more time with his family.
