SALT LAKE CITY-Saturday, The 192nd semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints commenced at the Conference Center at Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City.
Presiding at the first session of this General Conference was President Henry B. Eyring, the second counselor of The First Presidency of the Church.
The first speaker was President Dallin H. Oaks, the First Counselor in the First Presidency of the Church. He extolled the Church’s charitable and humanitarian work throughout the world as well as that of other religions.
President Oaks exhorted the Saints to be more appreciative of the charitable contributions made by other faiths and charitable organizations throughout the world.
Up next was Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of The Quorum of Twelve Apostles of The Church. He had a message particularly tailored to the youth of the Church.
He accentuated the importance of the freedom of choice and the influence it has in our lives.
Elder Uchtdorf also revealed the Church has unveiled a revised manual: For The Strength of Youth: A Guide For Making Choices.
He revealed it is of greater importance for the Saints to focus on the Savior. Rules are important, he confirmed, and are necessary each day of our lives, but they are but appendages to the Lord.
The next speaker was Tracy Y. Browning, the second counselor in the Primary General Presidency. She spoke of her own nearsightedness but accentuated how Christ can mollify obstructions to our vision.
She confirmed sacrifice is epitomized in the ordinance of the Sacrament. Christ directs the feet of the Saints to meetinghouses each week to partake of His Sacrament, she confirms.
The next speaker was Elder Dale G. Renlund of The Quorum of Twelve Apostles who confirmed personal revelation occurs within a spiritual framework. The Holy Ghost is the cause of all useful personal revelation we may receive, he confirmed.
He stated that if the Holy Ghost is not the source of revelation, Satan can cause us to “crash and burn.” Elder Renlund further confirmed that revelation for the Church is the prophet’s runway lest the organization of Christ’s Church should be disrupted.
The next speaker was Elder Rafael E. Pino of The First Quorum of Seventy who exhorted the Saints to attend Church services and partake of the Sacrament worthily each week.
The following speaker was Elder Hugo Montoya of the Seventy who extolled love as being the focal point of the Lord’s First and Great Commandment as recorded in the New Testament.
The next speaker was Elder Ronald A. Rasband of The Quorum of Twelve Apostles who testified of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon.
The concluding speaker of this session was Church president Russell M. Nelson who denounced child abuse, saying that he and Christ Himself both find the practice abhorrent.
