CEDAR CITY, Utah-Monday, Southern Utah University head football coach DeLane Fitzgerald announced the addition of Shay McClure to the staff as the program’s new linebackers coach.

McClure brings more than 25 years of coaching experience to the Thunderbirds’ program. He commenced his coaching career as the defensive backs coach at NCAA Division II Southern Oregon.

Prior to that, he starred as a student-athlete at the program.

McClure later moved onto NCAA FCS San Diego, serving as the Toreros’ defensive backs and special teams coach for three seasons.

He then moved onto NCAA Division III Occidental College (Calif.) as the defensive coordinator and later returned to Southern Oregon in this role.

Following a season as the Wolves’ interim head coach, McClure served as the defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at NCAA Division II Humboldt State (Calif.).

He then served as the defensive coordinator at Dixie State and later became the Trailblazers’ head coach.

While there, he posted a record of 18-15 (.545) and then became the defensive coordinator at NCAA Division II Southwest Minnesota State in 2019.

McClure has both a bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Southern Oregon.
