Wasatch High Wins Its 22nd All-Time Wrestling Title

OREM, Utah-Thursday, the Wasatch Wasps posted their 22nd all-time state wrestling title and first at the 5-A level by easily blowing away all contenders at Utah Valley University as the state tournament concluded.

The Wasps amassed 287.5 points to easily best second-place Box Elder as the Bees posted 209 points.

Among those winning individual state titles for the Wasps was future Air Force wrestler Zak Kohler at 145 pounds (his 2nd straight 5-A state title).

Kohler downed Viewmont’s Lorince Essig, 13-8 to end the season at 44-4.

Additionally, Mitchel Slack won the crown at 120 pounds (as he bested teammate Deklan Kelly).

River Wardle won the state title at 126 pounds as he downed Skyridge’s Colby Eastmond 13-0.

Sammy Heywood is the 5-A state champion at 132 pounds for Wasatch, downing Hadley Cown of Skyridge.

At 138 pounds, Stockton O’Brien prevailed 18-3 over Austin Gillette of Farmington to take the state title.

Finally, at 170 pounds, the Wasps’ Porter Chamberlain took the state title with a 10-2 win over Zack Johnson of Maple Mountain.

The Wasps also had several key places in the top six to increase their lead over Box Elder en route to the state championship.

Tristan Ocana placed fourth at 106 pounds, Noah Roylance finished third at 113 pounds (besting teammate Heath Clyde), Treyson Davis finished fifth at 126 pounds, and Brock Lloyd placed second at 160 pounds.

Wasatch’s dynastic success ensues as this is their fourth state title in wrestling in the past five years.

The only schools in Utah with more state wrestling titles than Wasatch are Delta (34) and Uintah (23).
