
LOS ANGELES – The Utah baseball team dropped the series finale to USC, 5-2 on Saturday evening.
USC scored two runs in the second and three in the seventh and a late rally in the ninth by the Utes plated two runs.
Dominic Foscalina and Braden Debenedictis each had two hits on the night while Davis Delorefice drove in a run.
On the mound, Brett Brocoff allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk over 5 1/3 innings pitched in the loss. Josh Lapiana and Trenton Stoltz each made brief appearances while Austin Moore allowed one hit over the final 1 2/3 innings.
Utah left the bases loaded in the top of the second but it was USC that got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the second after three hits, including a two-RBI double.
Matt Richardson tried to score on a wild pitch in the fifth after he singled to lead off the inning but USC recovered in time to make the play at home.
USC’s three runs in the seventh included a two-run home run, giving the Trojans a 5-0 lead.
Chandler Anderson led the ninth-inning rally with a double and Wade Gulden reached on an error which allowed Anderson to score. Foscalina had a hit to put two runners on and a pair of ground outs allowed Gulden to score before USC got a fly out to end the game.
Utah (2-16, 1-2 Pac-12) returns to the field on Tuesday, March 20, playing its first game in the state this year at BYU.
