Utah May Sell Student Data To Charter Schools

(Salt Lake City, UT) — The Utah State Board of Education is considering enacting a policy that would force public schools to share student information with charter schools. Public schools would share information including addresses and phone numbers to make it easier for charter schools to advertise directly to families. Should the policy be enacted, parents would be allowed to opt out of their child’s information being shared in order to comply with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act. Discussions are early and it is not known when the matter will be brought up to the USBE Finance Committee.
