Utah Legislature Rebukes Judges; Rescinds Collective Bargaining Ban

(Salt Lake City, UT) — Utah’s state legislature criticized a judge for redrawing Utah’s congressional districts as they extended the filing deadline for congressional candidates. Because the Republican majority cannot overrule the judge, pushing the filing deadline into March was the most they could do. The GOP lawmakers hope the judge’s ruling is overturned before March, so Republicans will have a congressional map that favors the GOP in every district. Yesterday’s special session also included the repeal of a law designed to strip most public employee unions of collective bargaining rights. Republicans led the effort to overturn their own law after it faced backlash and an effort to strike it down at the ballot box.
