Number of Utahns Applying For Unemployment Benefits Down For 6th Consecutive Week

SALT LAKE CITY-Per Thursday reports, the number of Utahns filing for unemployment benefits was down for the sixth consecutive week.

While thousands are still filing for benefits, the current number, 6,275, is significantly down from the 7,135 who filed the week of May 3-9.

Data released Thursday shows the continuing trend of unemployment because of COVID-19 nationwide.

A total of 6,583 people ended this weekly claim last week, per the Unemployment Insurance Division.

This is up from last week when 4,176 ended their weekly claim per the unemployment division.

Utah paid out just under $27 million in benefits last week per the release.

Another $48 million went out to Utahns in the form of a $600 federal stimulus that is added to claimants’ weekly unemployment checks.

Of those claiming unemployment benefits last week, some 15 percent represented the office and administrative supports industry, the most of any single industry, per the release.

The release also states 9 percent of the claims came from the production operations industry and an additional 8 percent stemmed from the sales industry.

Salt Lake County had the largest amount of claimants in the state with 43 percent of them last week. Up next was Utah County with 14 percent, followed by Davis County (8 percent), Weber County (7 percent) and Washington County (4 percent).
