NEW YORK-In 2020, the 200th anniversary of the Restoration of The Gospel of Jesus Christ to the earth, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made more than 200 deliveries to food pantries across the state of New York.
In February, Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Church’s Quorum of Twelve Apostles, announced the Church would donate food to 200 local pantries throughout The Empire State in 2020.
Throughout the course of the year, 35 truckloads containing 800 tons of food and commodities were shipped to New York from the Bishops’ Central Storehouse at Salt Lake City.
Food deliveries in New York commenced in Rochester, N.Y. in September. This was followed by subsequent donations at Albany, N.Y., Buffalo, N.Y., Syracuse, N.Y. and 50 other cities across the state.
The final deliveries were made in November to 135 food pantries in the greater New York City metropolitan area.
In December, New York governor Andrew Cuomo issued a citation to the Church recognizing the bicentennial of The First Vision which occurred near Palmyra, N.Y.
The Church was organized April 6, 1830 at Fayette, N.Y.
Presently, there are 83,293 Latter-day Saints in New York in 17 stakes. There are temples located at Palmyra (2000) and Manhattan (2004).
