SALT LAKE CITY-As was confirmed Tuesday, veteran KSL-TV meteorologist Bob Welti passed away at 94.
Armed with a 41-year career which ended in 1991, Welti was renowned as a “ratings magnet” in the Salt Lake City market.
Welti was a U.S. Navy-trained pilot who learned meteorology during his time in military service.
His charisma, however, was self-taught and made him a hot ticket for Salt Lake City viewers during his tenure.
Per a report from the Deseret News of Salt Lake City, market research indicators stated 98.8 percent of residents in the Salt Lake City television market could look at a picture of Welti and deduce who he was and what he did, via a statement from his long-time colleague Kent Norton.
Welti was first on Channel 4 in 1947 before making the move to KSL in 1965, where he remained until his retirement.
While at KSL, he teamed up with the late sportscaster Paul James and anchor Dick Nourse.
This trio comprised the longest-tenured broadcast team for an evening newscast in U.S. broadcast history, 24 years.
They were collectively enshrined in the Utah Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2000 for their contributions.
Welti’s wife, Gloria, passed away in 2007 after a long-time battle with health issues.
