HARARE, Zimbabwe-Saturday, groundbreaking occurred for the Zimbabwe Harare Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Attendance at this ceremony was limited because of local covid-19 restrictions.
Presiding at the ceremony was Elder Edward Dube, a General Authority and First Counselor in the Africa South Area Presidency, who offered the dedicatory prayer. Other Church leaders in attendance included Elder Ciro Schmeil, a General Authority Seventy and Second Counselor in the Africa South Area Presidency and his wife.
The event was also attended by His Excellency Emmerson Mnangagwa, the president of the Republic of Zimbabwe.
Upon its completion, this will be the first temple in Zimbabwe.
The Church has had a presence in Zimbabwe since the early 1930’s when the country was part of Southern Rhodesia.
There are currently 34,330 Latter-day Saints in Zimbabwe in seven stakes.
Zimbabwe has missions located in the cities of Harare and Bulawayo.
