Elder Renlund Speaks At BYU Education Week

PROVO, Utah-Tuesday, Elder Dale G. Renlund of The Quorum of Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spoke at BYU Education Week as part of this week’s activities.

Elder Renlund spoke of how observation, faith and reason work in tandem to facilitate revelation.

Elder Renlund confirmed this is how revelation was received by then-Church President Joseph F. Smith in 1918 when he beheld what later became Doctrine & Covenants 138 in vision.

Elder Renlund confirmed several vital truths:

  1. Personal revelation requires work, including learning how the Holy Ghost communicates individually with us.
  2. Personal revelation is facilitated by understanding and formulating questions from multiple angles
  3. Personal revelation usually requires depending on and acting on incomplete understanding
  4. Personal revelation is iterative
  5. Personal revelation requires humility to corroborate, and not concoct, impressions
